Important Product Update
It has been a challenging year! Lots of sun and little rain has affected the way grass grows – sunshine makes sugar but the plant cannot grow if does not have enough water. This has affected our Timothy harvest and we have worked very hard and done very many analyses on different cuts and sources to get the very best Timothy Chop we can. We have been able to source Timothy that is below 10% sugar, which is well within guidelines for horses with metabolic issues, but not as low as we usually achieve.
Many samples have been turned down as being too high in sugar. Although we would like lower sugar, it is just not possible this year. Fortunately, this natural sugar is within the cells of the plant and slowly released during digestion. This contrasts with quickly absorbed, added sugars, such as molasses.
Some customers use Timothy Chop as partial hay replacer, and this is still a good option. However, due to the difficult growing conditions, protein is lower than previously. If you are using significant amounts, ensure that any additional feed makes up for this. LucieNuts, Organic Lucie Pellets, Red Bag Grass Pellets, Sainfoin Pellets and TopGain are all good sources of protein.
Rest assured that we always work diligently for you and with our suppliers to get the very best that is available and meets our exacting standards, which includes never using straw.
